President of the Ukraine - Victor Yanukovych. Elected - 11 March 2010. 11-03-2010 Ukraine's President-Elect Viktor Yanukovych has taken the presidential oath of office. "I, Viktor Yanukovych, elected president of Ukraine by the will of the people, take the oath of allegiance as I assume this lofty post. I solemnly swear that with all myactions I will protect Ukraine's sovereignty and independence, seek the welfare of the Fatherland and the welfare of the Ukrainian people, protect the rights and freedoms of citizens, respect the Ukrainian Constitution and laws of Ukraine, perform my duties for the sake of all fellow countrymen and enhance the prestige of Ukraine in the world," the newly elected president said, with his right hand placed on the Constitution and the 16th-century Peresopnytsia Gospel. After Yanukovych signed the oath of allegiance, the head of the Constitutional Court, Andriy Stryzhak, presented him with presidential credentials and regalia - the seal and the mace, the presidential badge and the chain with the state emblem. Former president of the Ukraine 2005 / 2010 - Victor Yushchenko. Elected - in December 2004, inaugurated January 2005. Born – on February 23, 1954 in the village of Khoruzhivka, Sumy oblast, into a family of teachers. Father – Andriy Andriyovych Yushchenko (1919-1992), took part in the Second World War, after the war taught English at a local school. Mother – Varvara Tymofiyovna Yushchenko (1918-2005), a Physics and Math teacher. Marital Status – Married, with five children and two grandchildren; sons Andriy and Taras, daughters Vitalina, Sofia and Christina, grandchildren Yarynka and Victor. Ukraine is situated between 44"20' and 52"20' North latitude, and 22"5' and 41"15' East longitude. It occupies the southwestern portion of the East European Plain.The total area of Ukraine is about 60.370.000ha. It extends 1316 km from West to East, and 893 km North to South, about 603.700 sq. km. Ukraine is the largest country in Europe among those with entire boundaries within the European continent. It borders on Russia, Belarus, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Moldova. In the south, it is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Ukraine's total land boundary is 4.558 km, coastline is 2.782 km. Landscape and terrain; Almost the entire territory of Ukraine is a flatland with elevations generally below 350 m. The Carpathian Mountains intrude in the extreme west, and on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula the Crimean Mountains are located. The highest point in Ukraine is Mt. Hoverla in the Carpathians, with an elevation of 2.061 m. Lakes and rivers; There are over 73.000 rivers and 20.000 lakes and reservoirs in Ukraine. The largest river is the Dnipro, the third largest in Europe. The Dnipro divides the territory of Ukraine from north to south in two, its right and left banks, and flows into the Black Sea. Most major rivers flow south to the Black Sea; they include the Dnipro River in central Ukraine, the Southern Bug and Dnestr Rivers in the west, the Donets River in the east, and the Danube in the far south. The Western Bug flows northward through the western part of the country and joins the Vistula, which empties into the Baltic Sea. Climate; The climate of Ukraine is mostly temperate continental. A subtropical Mediterranean climate is prevalent on the southern portions of the Crimean Peninsula. There are no sharp drops in temperature and unexpected precipitation; strong winds are rare, and there are many sunny days. The Black Sea coast is subject to freezing. Precipitation generally decreases from north to south; it is greatest in the Carpathians, where it exceeds 1500 mm (58,5 inch) per year, and least in the coastal lowlands of the Black Sea, where it averages less than 300 mm (11,7 inch) per year. Population Who are the Ukrainians? Modern archeological evidence indicates that Ukrainians are indigenous to this land, where their ancestors lived in the fourth and third millennia BC. At the crossroad of East and West, the blood of the indigenous population has mixed with that of nomadic tribes for centuries on end. Inherent in Ukrainians are hard work, thrift, deep emotional bond with the land in which they were born and raised, hospitality, and benevolence. As a rule the Ukrainians combination of reserve and lyricism join together with the joy of life, unique humor, or bitter irony. All this is embodied in Ukrainian musical folklore heritage, folk music, decorative arts, and vivid folk rites, all of which reflect the people's entire historical memory, millenium-old culture, and history. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, wars, famine, and oppression by the authorities caused mass migrations of Ukrainians. Today, about thirteen million Ukrainians live outside Ukraine: 8 million in Russia, over one million in the United States, 600.000 in Canada, 500.000 in Poland and Romania, 150.000 in Argentina, and 100.000 in Brasil, a few found the way to the EU. The independence of Ukraine has awakened the feeling of the spiritual unity of all Ukrainians throughout the world. Population Population of Ukraine is 46.059.306 (2008/06 ) Ukraine ranks fifth in Europe in terms of population. Most people (68%) live in urban areas, and 32% in the countryside. Urbanization is especially marked in central and southeastern Ukraine, while in some western regions the rural population exceeds the urban population. The average population density is 81 people per square kilometer. In 1939 the population of Ukraine was 41 million people, but in 1945, only 27 million people. Ukrainians comprise 73% of the country's population. They belong to the eastern Slavic subgroup of the Indo-European language group. There arc more than 14 million people of other nationalities in Ukraine: Russians, Jews, Belarussians, Moldovans, Bulgarians, Poles and others. The Ukrainian Constitution guarantees equal ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and religious rights for all indigenous peoples and national minorities. Religion Predominantly Christian: Ukrainian Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic. Now Ukrainian Orthodoxy is represented by three branches – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate, 70%). – Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarchate, 20%). – Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (9,8%). – Other religions like Islam, Judaism etc. are also professed by some part of the population. |
